We're living exactly on the borderline between the natural world . . . and that other world which is generated by our brain cells. And so clearly that fault line runs through our physical and emotional makeup . . . where these tectonic plates rub against each other [are] the sources of pain.

Patterns are part of how we communicate. Whether it is a flight of birds in the sky, sticks scattered on a forest floor, or symbols set in paint, or notes strung together in a pleasing way, patterns help us connect with each other and the world.

Who I am is half what I’ve done and half what I like. What I’ve done is read books and drive ships and go to war and teach and travel and write and laugh as much as possible. I’ve volunteered with literary organizations for the last 10 years helping writers grow. I’ve lived in Canada and Afghanistan and Nicaragua and China and France. Ominous, hilarious, ominarious: storytelling led me to perform on many stages in North America and Europe, and will again. Who I am is half Gandalf and half Peter Pan; I am wisest when most a fool.
