Dear darling readers,
The sun is slanting toward autumn. For those who live in the same hemisphere as me, do you feel it? Are you happy about this change? It comes with mixed emotions for me, but overall, I love autumn, the time of my birth, my wedding to Charles and the feeling of a new year, thanks to years of being in school. May the feeling of new permeate your time this week, this month…

It’s a lot, being a person, I know you know it. I’ve learned to give myself a break when I’m not my ideal self.
from their glorious Substack, Whimsical Writing with Wake in Imagine a series of colours, tell me what they are…exhaustion and being humanThursday
Marion: I couldn’t say who I am. I don’t have the slightest idea. I have no roots, no story, no country, and I like it that way. I’m here. I’m free. I can imagine anything. Everything’s possible. I only have to lift my eyes and once again I become the world. Now, on this very spot, a feeling of happiness that I could keep forever.

If I had influence with the good fairy… I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life.
Rachel Carson as quoted by Stuart Mangrum in a post about the theme of this year’s Burning Man 2024: Curiouser & Curiouser.

I [do] think poetry is the way that I connect. I know it’s not for everyone. Sometimes it’s a way of exploring something unknown, or unraveling some sound or some lyrical exploration. But at its whole, at its core for me, is a way of connecting and sometimes it is a way of just connecting with myself like, “Oh, right, I am a human being, I am breathing, I am living in the world, and that’s enough.”

I am so happy autumn is here. Just even the word autumn makes me happy. But so do the deciduous trees dressing up in their finest garb before throwing their clothes off for the winter to stand silent.
It felt so strange a beautiful to find that you’d quoted me here, at the end of August, the beginning of autumn (my children will rail against this and say but September is actual fall! But not where I’m from . The seasons are short up north. And August was always my favourite. August and Autumn. Both beautiful words.)
I am sending love from the end of summer.
That's the second time I've seen that Rachel Carson quote in the space of an hour, in very different context - it reminds me of my dad who did retain his sense of wonder right til the end. Definitely something to aim for!
