Ten Sounds Trees Make by Katy Wimhurst appears on NationalPoetryMonth.ca on April 23, 2023
From Katy
Much of my visual poetry has environmental themes. The series from which this piece comes is more nature-based and reflective. The original idea came from lying outside in the communal garden, becoming aware of the sounds a hawthorn tree was making and trying to name them. Later, I Googled ‘sounds trees make’ and the title of the piece came from an article I found. I liked the idea of bringing out the sense of sound within visual poetry and of focusing on an aspect of trees often overlooked. I create my visual poetry digitally in Photoshop and draw on random arrangements that occur during the layering process. Word repetition is common in my work, too.
