Artist Statement
The Accordion book Night for Day is a mixed media piece from an ongoing series The Polarities Project. The text ruminates on themes of sanity and survival in a tenuous world of inequities and inequalities. I toggle between night and day as loose metaphors for darkness and light that are not literal states of being but that hold promise for nuance in their complexity. Using collage, I explore the ways image and text can inform one another in suggestive, unexpected ways, to spark the imagination and broaden our perspective on what it means to be human, to be both resilient and vulnerable. Lastly, my choice to use the repetitiveness of night and day is also a response to the passing of time, and to regenerative possibilities.
Night for Day was included in the exhibition “Pulp: Book and Paper Arts” at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, California, in 2022.
