Thanks to all who’ve sent me submissions so far. I’ve received submissions from 28 people, which is wonderful. Keep sending me your work and sharing the call please!
Helpful Hints
When you are preparing your submissions, please consider making a package with one e-mail, bio, contributor photo and the submissions, rather than sending individual single submissions in multiple e-mails. I’d really appreciate it. It makes it easier for me to work with the submissions and to respond to you. If the files are too large, i prefer WeTransfer.com but you can also send me a Zip file.
I don’t read the submissions until the day after the deadline: March 1, so it’s a good idea to make sure you have read the guidelines carefully. I might accept something over asking someone to provide me with what is missing. Make it as easy as possible for me to accept your work.
Curation Insights: How Do I Choose?
NationalPoetryMonth.ca has been in publication since 2008. I have refined my process over the years. I like it best when I have a variety of work to choose from, that’s one of the reasons why I suggest you send a lot of work.
My process for NationalPoetryMonth.ca is not to choose any specific work at this point, but rather to read through all the submissions after the submission period has closed and see what emerges as a theme or as something resonant about the collection. I see NationalPoetryMonth.ca as an annual anthology that is curated as a whole. It's interesting to see the themes, tones, moods or even colours and textures, styles, etc. I sometimes find contrast intriguing too, and I'll publish the ones that are the most different from the other.
I also try to publish those whose work I haven't published before, especially if they belong to marginalized groups. so a lot of factors go into my decision as well as feeling the work is unique and pushes (against) the boundaries of what poetry is.
You are welcome to ask me questions at any time: amanda at angelhousepress dot com is the best way to reach me. it takes me about a day to get to my e-mail sometimes.
Finally, i’m going to be sharing the link to the early sign up page for the forthcoming crowd funding campaign soon. there are some great limited edition offerings from small presses to choose from. keep your eye on this page and on the social media accounts: https://www.facebook.com/AngelHousePress/; https://www.instagram.com/earlamanda/; Twitter: https://twitter.com/kikifolle
