Ottawa poet and fiction writer, Frances Boyle and I discuss the poetry of favourite novels and read excerpts from the novels. This is the fourth instalment of a thread that began in 2020 in which I invite a guest to discuss the poetic elements of a genre or type of creative work that is not classified as poetry. In 2020, I discussed the poetry of music with Subhraj Singh, in 2021, the poetry of film with Jennifer Mulligan and in 2022 the poetry of photography with Charles Earl.
We discuss and read excerpts from the following books.
In the Skin of A Lion - Michael Ondaatje
Everything Affects Everyone - Shawna LeMay
Half-Blood Blues - Esi Edugyan
How to Build a Boat and As You Were by Elaine Feeney
The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy
Thanks to Frances for being on the show, to Charles Earl for processing, to Jennifer Pederson for help with the intro and outro, to all of you for listening and sharing the episode.
I’m doing a collaborative workshop with Kate Heartfield on poetry and prose, crossing genre boundaries to strengthen your writing on January 20. It’s two hours and $50. If you’d like more information, please get in touch with me.
It is at this point when I usually say, “stay tuned for the next episode of the Small Machine Talks.” This time I must let you know that the podcast, like other AngelHousePress activity will be on pause in 2024. Due to major changes in my life, I am going to have to change my focus. Charles and I have had a serious financial setback and must find ways to survive and to thrive. I am looking for work, full-time, part-time, contract, free-lance. In the meantime, I will offer my services as a mentor with over twenty years of experience as an editor and a writer. Please continue to subscribe here on Substack to keep in touch.
This is the eighth season of the Small Machine Talks. I thank all our guests, listeners and supporters. I am sorry that this pause is necessary. I am not going to say that the podcast and other AngelHousePress activities are over. I don’t know what the future will bring. It is a rough time for many people, but I feel fortunate and grateful for love and friendship and all the joy this podcast has brought me. Please feel free to get in touch with me.
I will always share my Substack posts for free, but I really welcome the support of paid subscribers. Thanks to all who’ve subscribed to Amanda Thru the Looking Glass.
I wish you all a peaceful, joyous and creative 2024.
