DISCUSSION
Charles and I both love shrimp. We look for the best deals we can find on raw, peeled shrimp. If we get the shrimp with the shells on, it is hard to determine whether the price is good because of the unknown weight of the shells vs the shrimp. Massines often has deals of 400 grams for $8 on sale. Kowloon sells 340 grams for $8.99.
I believe I have already spoken about Shanghai bok choy.
Rabbit hole alert: Bok Choy is a type of Chines cabbage.
It is delicious and very cheap at Kowloon at $2.35 for an 800-gram package. We use only a small portion in a meal, storing the rest in our refrigerator crisper, by wrapping the individual stalks in paper towels and putting them in a green bag. The bok choy can last a week or more that way. We use this method for much of our produce and it really does make it last longer. Of course, it can be a little more difficult to find it when you’re rifling through the crisper and all you see is green bags!
THIS WEEK’S CART
Stores considered this week were Metro.ca, Massine’s, Isabella Loblaws, Kowloon and Farm Boy, which are within walking distance, and Walmart, Real Canadian Superstore, Metro Rideau. Rideau Loblaws and Food Basics, which are accessible to us by public transit.
If we could get the cheapest price at all the stores, the total amount would be $126.18.
By combining delivery from Walmart, and the Real Canadian Superstore, plus a few strolls to local stores, Charles has obtained a price of $128.72 for this week’s shopping list, only a fraction of a percent higher than the cheapest price if we could shop all the stores.
In this week’s chart each store on its own will cost a shopper anywhere from eight to twenty-eight percent more or an extra $38.47. Any store that provided less than twenty-eight of the thirty-two items we were looking for was disqualified.
I wish you nutritious, delicious and affordable meals, lingering conversations with loved ones, joy and whimsy.
