On October 26, 2024, the League of Canadian Poets is offering a fall poetry intensive, a series of five workshops on Zoom. from 11:30 am to 5:30pm Eastern time. As part of this series, I am giving a workshop entitled Visual Poetry for Fun and Exploration. The series will be free for members and $25 for non-members with discounts for Black, Indigenous, racialized, LGBTQI2S+, and disabled poets. Please visit the LCP site to register.
In the Vispo Workshop, you will learn to
Pay attention to the visual aspects of your poems;
Notice how appearance affects your poem’s tone/mood;
Understand the variety of purposes of visual poetry as both a literary and artistic form;
Understand how to plan and submit visual poems;
Be inspired by the possibilities of visual poetry from a range of contemporary practitioners;
Have a list of visual poetry resources and tools.
Know how to submit visual poetry for publication.
Contemporary Visual Poets
We will examine the work of ten contemporary visual poets including ReVerse Butcher (Australia), James Knight (UK), Dona Mayoora (USA), Astra Papachristodoulou (UK), Kate Siklosi (Canada), Dani Spinosa (Canada), hiromi suzuki (Japan), Barrie Tullett (UK), Katy Wimhurst (UK), and Renee Gladman (USA).
3 Visual Poetry Publications/Presses
We will learn about submitting visual poems from visual poetry presses and journals, including Anhinga Press (USA), sonic boom and Yavanika Press (India) and streetcake magazine (UK).
You will receive 3 Google sheets with a list of resources, books, tools, sites and women making visual poetry today.
Be prepared for rabbit holes and deep dives.
