Dear Idiot

a song about jealousy and unlearning ingrained monogamy scripts
C G F
Dear idiot
this is a note to yourself
relationship trauma
is not good for your health
monogamy
is like gravity
if you defy its laws
you’ll get knocked on your ass
dear idiot,
you’re such a fucking fool
going back to love tropes
from Shakespeare in high school
just because the animals went
two by two in Noah’s ark
doesn’t mean that is the best
thing for you
just because monogamy
is in every film and song
doesn’t make it right for you
F C
getting possessive,
feeling jealousy
when instead you know
that love needs to
be set free to breathe
being jealous
causes a stabbing pain
you come unglued
and drive yourself insane
so let him be
with the ones he loves
and you’ll all be
better off
trust in the love
he has for you
you know
in your heart
how he feels
for you
C G F
you like to see
him being
everybody’s darling
flying cross a room
and spreading his wings
like a blueblack starling
and you’re glad
he’s your darling too
C G F
dear idiot
the scripts
are firmly
in your head
but you have to
unlearn them
or you’ll be
filled with dread
love isn’t
a precious gem
you hoard
in the dark
it’s shining rays
of sunlight
that spreads
from heart to heart
dear idiot
believe in yourself
for you there is
a better path
to mental health
dear idiot
love him freely
and love yourself
and love the world
love the world

I recently had a surprising bout of jealousy over something that hasn’t normally caused me jealousy, so I wrote a song about it. it find writing to be the way i process what i’m going thru and sharing maybe means that others don’t feel alone when they experience similar feelings…that’s the hope anyways…

still learning to play the ukulele. …
