Hello Amanda, it's amazing to read how much you and Charles can save per week and still eat well.

A savings tip I learned at a very young age is to go to your local market (the one for fresh produce) towards closing time. More often than not, you will get really good deals on especially fruit and vegetables.

In The Netherlands more and more supermarkets participate in the 'too good to go' initiative or have their own version of it. On all sorts of products that are near their best before date you get a discount varying from 25% up to 50% or sometimes even more.

I hope these tips will be of use to someone.

Best regards,

Marjolein

thanks for insight into how things are in the Netherlands, Marjolein. There are no markets near me, but the Byward Market, which is a 15-minute walk or bus ride, has a very small open market now. Another market in the near west end, about 20 minutes from me, the Parkdale Market may do that, but it isn't feasible for us. Grocery stores here offer discounts on meat and produce too. There was a big stink recently because one of the monopolies, Loblaws, reduced its discounts from 50 to 30% and even started an app where people could buy the fruit and veg that was on its last legs ahead of time, sight unseen. It's called Flashfood, and seems just to be another way to exploit people with financial difficulties. we often take advantage of the discounts on meat and freeze it.
